Another suggestion coming your way...
Before a battle, a neutral party could draw up a map of the battlefield on paint, just key pointing various parts of the planet as possible help or hindrances. I've seen them used before and they add a whole new tactical side to the battles and make people think more when it comes to making moves.
Simple, but it would be interesting perhaps.

I've been thinking about this, i was going to try and implement it onto the Galaxy Map for locations of fleets. It could work, problem being that unless we used ships models, which would be very tiny and have several in these large battles, we would need to use those symbols which armies use on tactical maps. So a tank squadron would appear in a rectangle with a triangular point to indicate which way it is facing. I forgot the name for those symbols, but I'm sure you've seen them somewhere. Those are the two ways i can think of doing this, but if you know of a better way, then let me know

I was thinking for ground battles mainly, but for space battles it could also work. I get what you mean for positioning of fleets. Perhaps it could be something extra and tactical where the admirals have to move their fleet(s) to protect/invade planets over a period of time?
Sort of turn or time based?

I was thinking of that before, i think i may have talked to Dan about it too. If i remember correctly, he didn't want such a thing because of it being limiting. There's benefits and drawbacks though, on the old redfive sites we always used to end up bringing out creativity rather than following guidelines.
We had a shop once we tried out, didn't end up very well because people didn't want to have to earn credits to have their character buy a ship. They wanted to just decide what they wanted and go with it, within reason of course.
